About Los Angeles

Los Angeles is located on the Southwest coast of California and is the largest metropolis in the state. Established in 1781 by Spanish governor Felipe de Neve, the city became part of Mexico in 1821. The United States purchased the territory in 1848, following the Mexican-American War. L.A. has a diverse geography ranging from seacoast to mountaintops and follows Chicago and New York as an economical powerhouse.

Known as the “entertainment capital of the world”, many popular sites in Los Angeles revolve around the TV and film industry. Many visitors to L.A. hope to run into a celebrity and tours provide the means for guests to view areas where Hollywood stars live, work and play.

Certain Los Angeles landmarks are also popular celebrity spotting locations. Rodeo Drive is a famous shopping area for celebrities and the affluent. Grauman’s Chinese Theatre is the sight for many Hollywood movie premiers and part of the path where stars imprint shoe and handprints into concrete. The Kodak Theater annually hosts the Academy Awards.

Universal Studios is a popular attraction where visitors have the opportunity to view movie and TV sets, learn how special effects are produced and embark on thrill rides centered around various action or adventure films. Cinemas on the studio grounds host special 3D and 4D movies. Madame Tussauds Hollywood is a subsidiary of the famous London Wax Museum. Life like wax replicas of movie stars, icons, movie characters and pop stars are on display for tourists to view and photograph.

Griffith Park is a favorite location, which encompasses over 4000 acres, making it larger than New York's Central Park. Numerous outdoor activities are possible here including camping, swimming, jogging, hiking, biking, horseback riding and golf. The park contains hills, valleys, canyons and caves that have been used as filming locations for TV and movies. Park facilities include the L.A. Zoo, Griffith Park Observatory, 2 golf courses, a riding stable and museums.

The LA Brea Tar Pits have conveyed the city’s history dating back tens of thousands of years. Archeologists continue to research and explore the pits, finding fossils that include giant mammoths and saber-toothed cats. Guests are welcomed daily to the unusual destination to view past and current discoveries.

Newport Landing offers cruises along the coastline and for whale watching excursions. The gray whale, giant blue whale, finback whale, ½ dozen species of dolphin and sea lions frequent the area and provide visitors with a rare photographing opportunity.
